Whole aircraft or airline seats: where the maths actually crosses

A charter price compared against one airline ticket always looks absurd. Compared against the whole party, on the routes where the airline answer is genuinely poor, it sometimes does not.

The short answer

Charter is sold by the aircraft, not the seat, so the cost per person falls as the party grows while the aircraft cost stays flat. A $97,500 sector is about $48,800 a head for two and about $8,100 a head for twelve.

The crossover arrives soonest where the scheduled answer is weak: no direct service, a long connection, an awkward arrival time, or a group large enough that the airline cabin cannot seat them together anyway. On a dense route with a good direct flight, scheduled wins on price and usually should.

The arithmetic, plainly

Using the median indicative figures from our own 300 published routes, here is what a whole-aircraft sector works out to per person as the party grows.

Party sizeSector at $24,000 (under 2,500 km)Sector at $97,500 (2,500 to 5,000 km)Sector at $127,000 (5,000 to 8,000 km)
4 people$6,000 each$24,375 each$31,750 each
8 people$3,000 each$12,188 each$15,875 each
12 people$2,000 each$8,125 each$10,583 each
16 people$1,500 each$6,094 each$7,938 each

Nothing in that table is an argument on its own. It is the denominator that people forget: the aircraft price does not change when more of your party boards it.

The costs people leave off the scheduled side

The costs people leave off the charter side

Symmetry matters, and a broker who only lists the first set is selling rather than advising.

Where the crossover actually is

There is no single passenger number, because it depends entirely on how good the scheduled alternative is. In practice the cases where charter wins cleanly look like this:

And the cases where it does not: a well-served city pair with several daily direct flights, a party small enough to sit together, and no time constraint that the timetable breaks. On those, scheduled is cheaper and we will tell you so.

One thing that is often the real answer

For a group, the question is frequently not charter versus scheduled but which legs of an itinerary each should carry. A party can fly scheduled on the dense long-haul sector where competition makes the fare good, and charter the awkward regional leg the timetable handles badly. Split by leg rather than deciding the whole trip one way.

Questions

Is it cheaper to charter a jet or buy airline seats for a group?

It depends on party size and on how good the scheduled alternative is. Charter is priced per aircraft, so the cost per person falls as the party grows: a sector at $97,500 is about $24,400 a head for four and about $8,100 for twelve. Charter wins soonest where there is no direct service, where a same-day return is needed, or where the party is too large to seat together.

How many passengers make a private jet worth it?

There is no fixed number, because it depends on the quality of the scheduled option. On a route with several daily direct flights, scheduled usually wins at any size. On a routing with no direct service, a long connection or a forced overnight, the comparison can turn in charter's favour at ten or more, and sometimes sooner once the party's time is counted.

How many people fit on a private jet?

Typically four to seven on a light jet, six to nine on a midsize, eight to sixteen on a heavy jet and ten to nineteen on an ultra-long-range aircraft. Larger groups are moved either on a VIP-configured airliner or on more than one aircraft, and the second option is often cheaper than it sounds on shorter sectors.

Does everyone in the group pay the same on a charter?

That is a matter for the group, not the operator. Charter is invoiced as one aircraft to one payer, which is why group charter works cleanly when a single organisation is paying and becomes complicated when fifteen individuals are each settling their own share. If nobody is paying for the whole aircraft, the trip is usually a scheduled trip.

Can a group charter include multiple cities?

Yes, and multi-city is one of the cases where charter is strongest, because the scheduled version often needs several bookings and forced overnight stops. The constraint to check early is cabotage: many countries do not allow a foreign-registered aircraft to fly passengers between two domestic points, which can force part of the itinerary onto a local operator.

Is baggage included on a private charter?

Within the aircraft's hold capacity, yes, and there is normally no per-bag charge. The constraint is volume and weight rather than price, and it is a real constraint on smaller types: a light jet with a full cabin has limited hold space. Groups travelling with equipment should state the load early, because it can change the aircraft class required.
