Question

What are international handling and overflight permit fees?

Answered by the MeghQuasar charter desk · Last updated 24 September 2026

Charges for the ground services at each airport and for permission to cross or land in each country on the routing. They are charged at both ends and for the airspace in between, they vary sharply by airport and country, and they are normally itemised separately from the charter price.

What each part covers

Ground handling

The agent who meets the aircraft: marshalling, steps, baggage, passenger reception, crew support, and the paperwork with the airport. At a business-aviation terminal this is what buys you the short walk from car to aircraft, and it is a real service rather than a notional fee.

Landing and parking

Charged by the airport, usually by aircraft weight, with parking charged by time on the ground. A city-centre business airport typically costs more in fees and saves an hour on the ground, which is usually the trade people want.

Overflight and landing permits

Permission from each state whose airspace the routing crosses, and to land where applicable. These are filed in advance, and twenty-four to forty-eight hours is comfortable on most routings. Some states are slower or require more documentation, which is a scheduling constraint more than a cost problem.

Why they matter more on cross-border trips

A domestic sector touches one authority. A cross-border sector can touch several, each with its own fee, its own lead time and its own paperwork. This is the part of an international charter that is genuinely more work than a domestic one, and it is the reason permits are worth raising early rather than late.

What to ask

Related questions

How long does it take to get an overflight permit?

Twenty-four to forty-eight hours is comfortable on most routings. Shorter is often possible and is handled case by case; some states need longer or require additional documentation, so the routing rather than the distance drives the lead time.

Are landing fees included in a charter quote?

Sometimes, and sometimes itemised separately. This is one of the main reasons two quotes for the same flight are not comparable at face value. Ask for inclusions in writing before comparing the headline numbers.

Do private jets clear customs differently?

Private arrivals are normally processed at a business-aviation terminal rather than the main hall, which is usually faster, but the legal requirements are the same. Documentation is filed ahead of arrival and passengers are cleared planeside or in the terminal.
